“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear” — Mark Twain

This article can help you find how changing your viewpoints and mindset can make the things you fear actually help you achieve your life goals. Read this and try to introspect and incorporate my suggestions in your fear resistance methods :)

If you haven’t read the previous article, you can give it a read here:

Only a few hours after I wrote the first article, I started receiving many views, they were a mixture of thank you letters, and “how to do it” questions. Some of those questions caught my eye. Many people said, “the content was great, very inspiring and thought provoking. But, following such lifestyle is not as easy as it seems, any suggestions for improvement?”

All those questions inspired me to write another article on how changing your viewpoint can get you rid of your fears. People often underestimate the power of brain, and hence let fear rule them. I will discuss about two simple mindsets, change it and see your fears fade away :)

The Reign Of Fear!

People’s heart is always ruled by fear! Fear exists in different forms, and each and every one suffers from it. Now since we are habitual of this, fear seems to be a general process. People see fear as regular life process. Believe me, this is the worst approach towards fear. This mindset will make you lose these two valuable things when you need them the most, time and decision making.

This paragraph from my previous article deserves a re-write:

Fear is simply the imagination of some sorrow that may come in future, it has nothing to do with the reality. Despite knowing that fear is nothing but imagination, is it very difficult to liberate oneself from it?

The Evergreen Question, “Why Me!?”

The first question that comes to our mind in case of bad situations and conditions is, Why Me?

Many a times I hear people hear phrases like “Why did it happen with me?” or “Oh my god, I am never going to get out of it!” etc.
Human mind tends to judge and predict the outcome based on present circumstances. Not only others, but people keep on judging themselves too, they think of their future potential based on their present opportunities and skills. But we forget to ask ourselves one question, do we really have full control over our future? Partly yes, our actions today hold a great part in designing our future, but still we can only talk about probability, no one knows what will really happen. So why to be afraid? There is absolutely no point!

Whenever I find myself in such situation, I always say this one thing to myself, you are not the first one who went through this, and you are not the only one! There are many people who might have gone through worse and still came out of it. A few days ago I heard a great phrase somewhere which I would like to share,

It doesn’t matter whether the glass is half empty or half full… Be grateful that you have a glass, and there is something in it.

Changing this simple way of perceiving things will change our life completely. As I said, many people think that it is easy to say but difficult when we actually start implementing these philosophies in our lives.
Well my views are, it is not at all difficult, having control on our fears becomes very easy if we include these two traits in our personality.

1. Gratitude

Always dream big but never be greedy! Dreaming big would keep you motivated, but if you merge ambitions and greed, you will never be satisfied.

Most people dream of success and start running a rat race, work day and night, put in all the required hard work and efforts, and even reach heights but still they don’t have peace of mind.

“Satisfaction” is the only character trait which can bring you peace of mind. dreaming for a better tomorrow is not wrong, it is actually a good thing. Without ambitions everything will be monotonous and boring, so it is very good to have big dreams. But, having greed for accomplishing those dreams is bad, greed takes you in wrong directions.

The best piece of advise that I give is, dream big, take moonshots, but be satisfied with what you have. Work hard considering it your duty instead of greed, and you will see the changes, your heart will be content and mind in a state of peace.

One more question arises, how to remain satisfied and content, isn't it human nature to be greedy for more?

Answer is very simple, gratitude. Be grateful for what you have, if you believe in god, then thank god every morning for everything you have. Even if you are an atheist, express your gratitude to nature for everything you have.

Gratitude triggers positive emotion. Being grateful makes you savour great things you have at the moment. We get things done easily if we fill ourselves with a positive mindset. Therefore, keep your mind full of positive thinking and gratitude :)

2. Excitement

Fear is the greatest obstacle between you and your success, to be really successful, you need to learn how to master your fears and this can be done very easily by changing how we perceive things.

Ask yourself this one question everytime you feel afraid or nervous, What is it that you are scared of?

Are you afraid of losing something? If you look deep inside yourself, you will find that you own nothing. You had no possessions to start with, and there is no reason to be afraid of loss of something that wasn’t yours to begin with!

What have you lost for which you cry?
What did you bring with you, which you have lost?
What did you produce, which has destroyed?
You did not bring anything when you were born.
Whatever you have, you have received from Him.
Whatever you will give, you will give to Him.
You came empty handed and
you will go the same way.
— Bhagavad Gita

If you look at things with this mindset, you will find that there is no reason of fear.

What happens when we are scared? Our heart beats increase, little sweating, mind becomes a little unstable, random thoughts start crossing our mind.

What about excitement? What happens when we are very excited about something? Isn’t it the exact same? Heart beats increase, little sweating, and random thoughts crossing mind!

The only difference is how our mind perceives it! We enjoy excitement, but hate fear. How about we turn all our fears into adventures, how about we look at our fears as a moment of adventure and be excited about it?

How can this be done? Answer is simple, practise, practise and practise. Keep working until the thing you are afraid of the most, becomes your muscle memory and you are ready for the greatest challenge.

And, whatever happens at the end, don’t regret!
If you succeed, you get to live your dreams,
If you fail, you get experience which you can use next time to succeed!
All you need to have is, willingness to learn and improve.

Practise, challenge, introspect and improve!

That’s it
